The unseen life form is my muse . Throughout my wide ranging travels it was not the open landscapes that compelled me to paint. It was hidden worlds that sparked my imagination. Snorkeling the reefs of Tahiti or the Caribbean, viewing bacteria and cells under the microscope, or simply observing the ecosystems of insects and plant life in my garden is where I reestablish a dialogue with nature.
Today, the continuum of our natural world is in a fragile and precarious state. Organic life forms and biodiversity are threatened by environmental stresses which is of great concern. The question persists , will these organisms become extinct? My hope , expressed in this body of work , is that they will restructure and transmute to accommodate a changing environment . My paintings are pure fantasy , an exploration into how they may evolve and thrive and ultimately , what they might look like. As Darwin observed, it’s not the survival of the strongest or the most intelligent . Those who survive are the most adaptable to change .
Sometimes I paint with abandon, no plan in mind and then choose the plant life , sea life or microscopic organism that works best in this field to evoke movement, mystery or the quietude of worlds not seen by the naked eye. Sometimes I marry all three to make a life form all my own where reality and fantasy collide, at first blush familiar but ultimately unrecognizable. In either case, I keep building layers to create an environment saturated with detail and depth, as if looking through a window into a strange and inexplicable world.
